Understanding the Army Body Fat Assessment

The New One-Site Tape Test (2023)

In June 2023, the U.S. Army introduced a new one-site tape test as part of the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). This new assessment method is more accurate than the previous multiple-site test and uses only the abdominal circumference measurement and body weight to calculate body fat percentage.

How the Army Body Fat Test Works

1. One-Site Circumference-Based Tape Test

The test measures the abdominal circumference at the level of the belly button and records the soldier's body weight. These measurements are then used in a formula to calculate the body fat percentage.

The formula for men:

Body Fat % = -26.97 – (0.12 × weight in pounds) + (1.99 × abdomen circumference in inches)

The formula for women:

Body Fat % = -8.41 – (0.15 × weight in pounds) + (1.18 × abdomen circumference in inches)

2. ACFT Exemption

Soldiers who score 540 or higher on the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) with a minimum of 80 points in each event are exempt from the body fat assessment, regardless of their height and weight measurements.

3. Supplemental Assessments

If a soldier fails the initial one-site tape test, they may request a supplemental assessment using more accurate methods such as:

  • Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA)
  • InBody 770 bioelectrical impedance analysis

If a soldier doesn't request a supplemental assessment or fails it, they will be enrolled in the Army Weight Control Program.

Tips for Passing the Army Body Fat Assessment

1. Focus on your abdominal measurement: Since the new test prioritizes abdominal circumference, targeting core exercises and reducing abdominal fat can significantly improve your results.

2. Maintain proper posture during measurements: Stand naturally with arms at your sides and abdomen relaxed. Attempting to "suck in" may be noticed by the assessor and is not recommended.

3. Excel in your ACFT: Achieving a score of 540+ with at least 80 points in each event will exempt you from the body fat assessment completely.

4. Maintain a balanced diet and exercise regimen: Regular cardio, strength training, and a calorie-controlled diet will help manage both your weight and abdominal circumference.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Army Body Fat Calculator?

The one-site tape test is considered more accurate than the previous multi-site test, but it's still an estimation. For precise body fat measurements, methods like DXA scans or the InBody 770 provide greater accuracy.

What happens if I fail the body fat assessment?

If you fail both the initial tape test and do not request or fail a supplemental assessment, you'll be enrolled in the Army Weight Control Program. This program includes regular weigh-ins, supervised physical training, and nutritional counseling.

How is the abdominal circumference measured?

The measurement is taken at the level of the belly button (navel) with the soldier breathing normally and relaxed. The measurement tape should be parallel to the floor and not compress the skin.

What is considered a good ACFT score?

A score of 540 or higher on the ACFT with a minimum of 80 points in each event is considered excellent and exempts soldiers from the body fat assessment. The maximum possible ACFT score is 600 points.
